This GTA 3 Fan Remake Is The Remaster We Should Have Got
GTA 3 has been drawn into a fan-made remake that redefines a part of Rockstar’s acclaimed open-world crime fest in the dazzling visuals of Unreal Engine 5.
The launch of the official remastered GTA trilogy last year was so disastrous that Rockstar eventually offered frustrated players the free game as compensation. But this fan-made take shows Liberty City in all its glory. short video (opens in new tab) Styled as a trailer, imagining what GTA 3 might look like if it were built into Epic’s top-of-the-line game engine.
The clip spans the city’s skyline, showing the grubby of its subway network, before cutting to its protagonist Claude, driving along the side of its streets. It’s all presented in extraordinary detail and to a fidelity worthy of a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
The remake certainly makes the most of Unreal Engine 5’s capabilities, delivering textures at resolutions that go even beyond the recent GTA 5 next-gen ports. Much has also been made of the engine’s lighting capabilities, with a moment in the video showing the cloud nearly silhouetted by reflections from the pavement. Add a mafioso voiceover to it, and it all gets very atmospheric.

remaster that should have been
Although impressive, this take on GTA 3 will offer fans of the classic crime ’em up series cool comfort. Players are still bitter since Rockstar took over the GTA Trilogy collection last year, which updated GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas to run on modern hardware. Unfortunately, they were also updated with several technical bugs, performance problems, and art style changes, disappointing fans who expected the series to be remembered exactly as they remembered it.
However, Rockstar has made improvements to the remaster in the months since its release. A slew of content drops have brought it in line with player expectations, while major performance updates have finally made it playable. The most serious technical bugs have been ironed out, and the entire trilogy plays at a consistent, smooth framerate.
